• Muriuki arrives with over 30 years of experience in meteorology, hydrology, and institutional leadership — a portfolio the Kenya Meteorological Department (KMD) describes as “instrumental” to the country’s climate resilience ambitions.

Edward Maina Muriuki has officially taken the helm as Acting Director of Meteorological Services, according to a statement on October 6, 2025, by the State Department of Environment and Climate Change under the Ministry of Environment, Climate Change and Forestry.

His appointment follows the retirement of Dr. David Gikungu, who stepped down on July 28 after a distinguished career shaping Kenya’s meteorological landscape.

Before his appointment as Acting Director of Meteorological Services, Edward Maina Muriuki held several senior roles within the Kenya Meteorological Department (KMD). His most recent position was Deputy Director in charge of Forecasting Services, where he oversaw the delivery of weather predictions and climate advisories across the country.

Muriuki arrives with over 30 years of experience in meteorology, hydrology, and institutional leadership — a portfolio the Kenya Meteorological Department (KMD) describes as “instrumental” to the country’s climate resilience ambitions.

He holds a Master’s in Water Resources Engineering from the University of Dar es Salaam, a Postgraduate Diploma in Hydrology, and a BSc in Mathematics and Meteorology from the University of Nairobi.

With Kenya accelerating its commitment to the Early Warning for All initiative, Muriuki’s technical depth and strategic foresight are expected to fortify the Department’s ability to deliver timely, reliable, and actionable climate intelligence — protecting lives, livelihoods, and ecosystems.

“This appointment marks a significant milestone in my career as a meteorologist,” Muriuki said. “I look forward to enhancing the science of meteorology and hydrology in Kenya, and to working closely with our staff and partners to improve weather and climate service delivery across the country.”
