• The United States of America is one of the most developed countries, making it one of the most significant contributors to climate change discussions and climate finance. On the other hand, Kenya is a developing country that has yet to stand on its own in matters of climate preservation.

On January 20, 2025, US President Donald Trump issued an executive order withdrawing the United States from the Paris Agreement. The Paris Agreement is a legally binding international treaty on climate change that has, since 2016, helped to curb fundamental issues related to climate change in the countries involved. It helps to mobilise funds and resources that cater to projects aimed at improving climate status.

The United States of America is one of the most developed countries, making it one of the most significant contributors to climate change discussions and climate finance. On the other hand, Kenya is a developing country that has yet to stand on its own in matters of climate preservation.

Among the long-term goals of the Paris Climate Agreement is to formulate and submit low greenhouse gas emissions. This development strategy would need significant financial and technological assistance to be effectively achieved in Kenya. This is not only for the benefit of the countries involved but for the world in general.

The special climate envoy for Kenya, Ali Mohamed, commented on how Trump’s decision would elude to an increase in environmental pollution.

“This decision is a direct threat to global efforts to limit temperature rise and avert the catastrophic impacts of climate change, particularly for the world’s most vulnerable nations”, the statement by Ali Mohamed read in part.

Olivia Adhiambo Ojwando, the climate policy director at Wildlife works in her articles mentions that Trumps withdrawal could slow global climate action which reduces other countries’ commitment to climate change efforts of combating global warming.

I hope that after the 90 days withdrawal declared by President Trump, the US will reconsider this critical decision and rejoin the band dedicated to making the world a much better place for all to live in.
