The recent downpour across the country has occasioned excess accumulation in some inland water bodies due to the surplus flow through adjacent streams. Lake Naivasha has fallen victim to this ordeal, as the excess water has spilled over and flooded the nearby area.

Locals of Kihoto in Naivasha are perplexed as the water has not only disrupted their day to day activities, but also forced them to seek alternative spaces to reside in. This has dug deep into their already impaired pockets amid economic constraints.

It has been reported that one individual has lost their life, courtesy of the calamity. The lives of over 20,000 residents are also on the line since this nightmare comes with a load of threats like wildlife invasion and a looming outbreak of waterborne diseases.

The swollen lake has additionally paralyzed learning in the area because schools' infrastructure has been soaked, jeopardizing pupils' safety.

Alex Mbugua, MCA Lakeview ward, has found fault with the President’s unfulfilled promise to compensate people affected by floods to facilitate their relocation. He also called on the National Government to intercede and help the locals of Kihoto.

“Mine is to ask the National Government to come in and intervene. The President had given some ultimatum when he came to Mathare some time back, and he said people will be displaced and given some amount to relocate to other areas. These people have not been given anything and no one is addressing their issue,” he said.

The MCA, Viwandani ward, Hon Mwangi Muraya, denounced the nonchalant Department of Disaster Management towards reacting to this catastrophe. “There exists a Ministry of Disaster which is adequately funded to deal with such cases but we are wondering where they have been,” he noted.
