The Ministry of Environment, Climate Change and Forestry has prioritised protecting and nurturing seedlings to maturity as part of the revitalised daily tree-growing programme led by Cabinet Secretaries and Senior Ranks of the Executive across the country.

In a statement on X, the Ministry said, “the objective is being met through fencing of sites, employing host communities to nurture the trees, and tightening public access to protected conservation areas by Kenya Forest Service enforcement teams and Community Forest Associations (CFA) scouts.”

One recent example unfolded on June 10, 2024, when Hon Soipan Tuya, the Cabinet Secretary for Environment, Climate Change and Forestry joined Attorney General Hon JB Muturi & State Law Office and Department of Justice staff led by Solicitor General Hon Shadrack Mose, area MP Hon George Sunkuiya and the community in planting 6,000 trees at Kona Baridi in Ngong Forest, Kajiado County.

At the beginning of May 2024, President Ruto tasked all the Ministries with daily tree-planting exercises.

President William Ruto added that the tree-planting exercise will be conducted for the next six months.

This is in line with the government’s initiative to plant 15 billion trees by 2032.The programme is being undertaken in all 47 counties nationwide, and all stakeholders, including community groups, NGOs, schools, churches, farmers, and others, are being called upon to take active participation by raising tree nurseries and planting trees in their compounds and forests.
