- Since the global coordination launched in 2002, World Oceans Day has grown from a mere concept to thousands of events, and billions of people are reached annually. As of 2025, the World Oceans Day network includes approximately 2000 organizations in 180 nations.
World Ocean Day is celebrated internationally on June 8 every year. The theme for 2025 is "Sustainable Fishing Means." This theme focuses on the importance of sustainable fishing practices in guaranteeing healthy and abundant marine resources for future generations. The slogan for the day is "Let us come together to save our oceans; save the Sea to See the Future."
World Oceans Day is celebrated to awaken us on the planet's importance. Oceans are not only the lungs of our planet, but they are also leading sources of food and medicine as well as a crucial part of the biosphere.
The aim of celebrating this day is to sensitize the general public on the impacts of human behaviour on the ocean, create a global movement of citizens for the ocean, as well as mobilizing and uniting everyone on a project for sustainable management of the planet's oceans.

Many people underestimate the fact that oceans or water cover 71% of the Earth's water, which is approximately 320 million cubic miles. The globe illustration indicates that blue spheres represent relative amounts of Earth's water in comparison to the size of the Earth.

Despite this fact, the planet's water sphere looks small. This is because water is never sitting still. The water cycle ensures the planet's water supply is constantly moving from one form to another and from one place to another.
Therefore, everyone needs to understand that the ocean is responsible for producing 50% of the Earth's oxygen, is home to a vast amount of Earth's biodiversity, and is the major source of fish and other marine food that feed more than a billion people around the world.
The ocean also provides income to some people since it has employed around 40 million people in various ocean-based industries.
The ocean, therefore, needs support. Around 90% of big fish populations are depleted, and 50% of coral reefs are immensely destroyed. Human actions are taking more from the ocean than it can be replenished.
Hence, a collective effort is required to ensure a new balance with the ocean that will not continue depleting it but rather restore its vibrancy and bring it new life.
In 2025, we need to genuinely celebrate World Ocean Day and endeavour to restore its glory.
This year, immerse yourself in a bathtub or go swimming to celebrate clean water and the interconnected web of life that depends on it. While soaking, breathe deeply and thank the ocean; it's the source of much of that oxygen you are breathing.
Oceans are a big part of our lives, and it's time we awaken to this reality. Every drop of water can swell the heart of the ocean. Therefore, we must endeavour not to waste the ocean but always value it for a better life today and tomorrow.
