In an effort to attain the 15 billion trees target, the Cabinet Secretary for Environment, Climate Change and Forestry Dr. Deborah Barasa urges all the environmental stakeholders to visit Kenya Forestry Research Institute (KEFRI) and receive insights on sustainable forest management and agroforestry.

CS Barasa says the knowledge sharing shall ensure that all the 15 billion trees we plant will survive and thrive.

On May 9, 2025, the CS made an official visit to KEFRI to engage with researchers and review ongoing programs especially seed propagation geared towards the 15 billion tree growing campaign.

KEFRI in Muguga, Kiambu County was established in 1986. The institute undertakes research and provides technologies and information for sustainable management, conservation and development of forests and natural resources.

KEFRI currently undertakes its research and development activities under five thematic areas; Forest Productivity, Health and Tree Improvement, Forest Biodiversity, Climate Change, and Environment Management, Forest Products and Entrepreneurship Development, Socio-Economic Policy and Governance, Forest Research Support Services.

During her visit to KEFRI, Deborah promised to work towards the attainment of the targeted growth of 15 billion trees.

In a statement on X, she said, “The engagement with the team behind this important organization, whose role is sustainable management and conservation of our forest, deserves our full support. The knowledge sharing shall ensure that all the 15 billion trees we plant will survive and thrive.”

The CS also seeks to ensure that Kenyans work together to ensure sustainability of the forest and all the natural resources.

She was accompanied by the Principal Secretary for the State Department for Forestry, Mr. Gitonga Mugambi, CEO Dr. Jane Njuguna and Directors led by Gen (Rtd) Samson Mwathethe among other delegates.
