• According to Health Public Secretary Mary Muthoni, several drums containing the toxic chemical are missing and suspected to be in the possession of individuals within the surrounding community.

The recent incident involving a truck carrying Sodium Cyanide overturning in Kambembe, Kiambu, on July 20, 2024, highlights the dangers that human activities can pose to public health and the environment. The truck was en route to Congo from Mombasa port. As the primary contributors to environmental pollution, both knowingly and unknowingly, it is time for humans to take responsibility and address these pressing issues.

The spill of Sodium Cyanide, a highly toxic chemical used in various industrial processes, has led to a concerning situation. Not only is the substance extremely hazardous to human health, with even small amounts potentially being fatal, but it also poses significant environmental risks.

According to Health Public Secretary Mary Muthoni, several drums containing the toxic chemical are missing and suspected to be in the possession of individuals within the surrounding community.

If the missing containers are not recovered and the chemical contaminates water bodies, it can devastate aquatic life, persist in the environment, and bioaccumulate the food chain. Additionally, improper disposal or spills can lead to soil and groundwater contamination, further compounding the problem.

The Ministry of Health advised Kenyans of the hazards of sodium cyanide to their health. The PS noted that the substance is highly toxic, and ingestion or inhalation of even small amounts can be dangerous.

This is because it interferes with oxygen use. Other symptoms include headache, dizziness, shortness of breath, nausea and vomiting. Prolonged exposure can also cause illness such as neurological damage, thyroid dysfunction, and cardiovascular problems.
