Agri-food is any activity involving the production, distribution, consumption, and disposal of food at a global level. This sector holds the pride of supporting the livelihoods of about 2.5 billion people.

This venture primarily picks from the environment basket, with a preference for freshwater, high-quality land, pollination, disease and pest control, and climate regulation.

However, food production is the biggest threat to biodiversity and healthy ecosystems as it is a significant driver of deforestation, water consumption, and soil degradation, with agriculture behind the wheel towards species’ extinction.

Despite all, agri-food is the planet’s best bet in ensuring a nature-positive economy.

A collective input led by Business for Nature and Accenture, with assistance from the World Economic Forum (WEF) and the World Business Council for Sustainable Development (WBCSD), has formulated a map to point nature-dependent companies in the right direction.

This guide constitutes a five-action plan to help companies contribute to a nature-friendly future: avoid, reduce, and remove greenhouse gas emissions; avoid degradation and accelerate the regeneration of land and ecosystems; reduce water use; promote circularity and innovate products, practices, and technologies; and finally, collaborate, educate, support, and advocate across the value chain.

Abiding by these, the dream of ensuring a halt in nature loss by 2030 will be a reality since the production sector and environment would have reached an agreement.

“These actions will strengthen sustainability goals, boost business resilience, unlock opportunities, and help secure the future of the agri-food system. We can only achieve a nature-positive world together,” read the WBCSD statement.
