- The MOU establishes a structure for collaboration between the three organizations to develop and deliver a comprehensive climate education curriculum.
In a bid to increase learners' and educators' awareness, knowledge, and action on climate change, Alef Education, the Kenya Institute of Curriculum Development (KICD), and the United Nations Children's Fund (UNICEF) announced the signing of a Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) on June 26, 2024.
The MOU establishes a structure for collaboration between the three organizations to develop and deliver a comprehensive climate education curriculum. This curriculum will complement the existing school curriculum developed by KICD and ultimately contribute to achieving Sustainable Development Goal 13: Climate Action.
The climate education curriculum will include educational videos, quizzes, and interactive materials on carbon literacy. KICD CEO Prof. Charles Ochieng Ong'ondo stated that integrating climate education into public school curricula in Kenya is a commitment to providing relevant educational content that prepares learners for the future and is a step in building a sustainable society.
“To ensure widespread access and impact, KICD will integrate the content into the Kenya Education Cloud, making it readily available to learners and teachers across Kenya,” said Charles Ong’ondo.
UNICEF Country Representative Shaheen Nilofer reiterated that children are the least responsible for climate change yet are among the most affected.
