The National Environment Management Authority (NEMA) has announced that the theme for the event will be "Land Restoration, Desertification & Drought Resilience."

Like many other countries, Kenya has been grappling with the challenges of degradation, desertification, and drought for several years. These issues have exacerbated the triple planetary climate change crisis, nature and biodiversity loss, and pollution and waste.

The impact of this crisis is particularly severe, affecting nearly half of the world's population and posing a threat to half of global GDP—the rural communities, smallholder farmers, and the extremely poor bear the brunt of these challenges.

The World Environment Day 2024 theme of "Land Restoration, Desertification & Drought Resilience" emphasizes the urgent need to address these issues. Land restoration can reverse the tide of land degradation, drought, and desertification.

Restoring and rehabilitating degraded lands can mitigate the adverse effects of climate change, protect biodiversity, and ensure sustainable land use.

World Environment Day, celebrated annually on June 5, raises awareness and inspires action for environmental protection. This year's event will focus on the global challenges of land degradation and drought and highlight the importance of building resilience to these issues.

While Kenya will be hosting the event in Embu County, it is worth noting that Saudi Arabia will be the host country for the worldwide celebration of World Environment Day 2024.

The choice of Embu County as the host for this year's celebration follows the successful hosting of World Environment Day 2023 in Nakuru County.
