Kenya’s TVET institutions are scaling renewable energy and climate-smart training to build resilience.
The sector aims to convert greening efforts into bankable projects aligned with national climate goals.
The 30th United Nations Climate Change Conference (COP30) has repositioned education institutions as central players in global climate action.
Kenya’s Technical and Vocational Education and Training (TVET) sector has embraced this call, transforming it into a demand for long‑term, bankable climate projects.
According to Dr. Esther Muoria, Principal Secretary in the State Department for TVET, strengthening data systems and translating institutional evidence into implementable projects will ensure that the sector’s contribution to climate action is both durable and measurable
.
“Achieving this vision requires moving past fragmented greening activities toward bankable, scalable, and community‑impactful projects that align with Kenya’s Nationally Determined Contributions (NDCs). This shift will anchor TVET as a central player in advancing national climate commitments while securing sustainable financing for future growth,” she
explained in a post on X.
According to her, so far, TVETs have contributed through tree planting and integrating environmental topics into curricula.
She has added that Kenyan institutions are installing renewable energy systems, expanding climate‑smart training modules, and restructuring greening efforts into investment‑ready programmes. This ensures that TVET contributions are not only visible to the public but also quantifiable, directly linking to Kenya’s NDCs and strengthening the country’s climate leadership.
“I highlighted the need to strengthen long-term resilience through initiatives such as leveraging on renewable energy and grounding the projects in viable climate-finance pathways,” she said.
COP30 began on November 10 and will end on November 21, 2025 in Belém, Brazil, at the heart of the Amazon rainforest. It is considered a decisive milestone for updating global climate action plans and accelerating delivery on the Paris Agreement
