Nature Kenya has condemned the proposal to dissolve Nairobi National Park, labeling it as misguided and indicative of a disregard for the well-being of urban Kenyans.
In a press statement released on June 29, 2025, Dr. Paul Makitu, Director of Nature Kenya, describes the park as an "island of wilderness within a city," a unique feature that has put Nairobi on the global map. "It provides Nairobians with fresh air, relaxation, and learning," he emphasized.
The call for the park's dissolution came from Francis Atwoli, Secretary General of the Central Organisation of Trade Unions (COTU), who on June 22, 2025, argued that the area should be repurposed for infrastructure projects to accommodate the expanding capital city.
His comments were in response to opposition from residents of Karen regarding a planned 12.5-kilometre railway line connecting Riruta and Ngong. Atwoli suggested relocating the park's animals to other prominent locations, such as Maasai Mara National Park.

"While Kenya's 46 other counties may prioritize infrastructure development, Nairobi's most urgent need is the preservation and restoration of these natural green spaces," stated Nature Kenya.
The organization has urged leaders at all government levels, the public, and stakeholders to firmly reject any proposals that threaten the park’s integrity. "We call for a renewed, unwavering commitment to safeguarding and enhancing Nairobi’s natural heritage," Nature Kenya added.
