• For nearly five decades, World Environment Day has raised awareness, supported action, and driven change for environmental protection. Each year features a new theme that highlights specific issues needing attention.

History tells us that the mid to late 19th century marked the beginning of a pattern leading to the gradual destruction of our planet.

The term Anthropocene describes this period in Earth's history, where human activities have a profound impact on the climate and ecosystems. It indicates that humans have become a major force shaping the environment, influencing everything from weather patterns to biodiversity.

As awareness of our environmental responsibilities has grown, the importance of caring for our planet has become increasingly clear. This year, we celebrate 53 years since World Environment Day was established, a day born from discussions about the integration of human interactions with the environment.

For nearly five decades, World Environment Day has raised awareness, supported action, and driven change for environmental protection. Each year features a new theme that highlights specific issues needing attention.

Today, the environment is teetering on the brink of collapse, with indicators showing little to no improvement. According to the State of the Climate for 2024, extreme weather and climate change are exacerbating hunger, insecurity, and displacement across Africa, impacting every facet of socio-economic development.

Thus, it is only fair that when discussing climate change and environmental pollution, it is crucial to recognize that humans are both the culprits and the potential saviors. Caring for the environment means maintaining its health and integrity, avoiding further destruction.

The environment encompasses everything around us: the air we breathe, the water we drink, the land we inhabit, and all living organisms. It is the natural world that sustains life and provides essential resources.

Celebrated every June 5, World Environment Day aims to inspire awareness and action for environmental protection. The theme for World Environment Day 2025 is ‘Tackle Plastic Pollution to Protect the Planet.’

In a message to mark this important day, United Nations Secretary General Antonio Guterres stated, “Together, let’s end the scourge of plastic pollution and build a better future for us all.”
