The Cabinet Secretary for Environment, Climate Change and Forestry Hon. Aden Duale and Bungoma Governor H.E. Ken Lusaka have unveiled the expansion of Kaberua Tree Nursery in Kapsokwony, increasing its annual production capacity from 500,000 to 1 million seedlings.

This significant development will enhance efforts to restore degraded areas of Mt. Elgon Forest, aligning with the ambitious 15 Billion National Tree Growing Programme.

The new Kaberua Tree Nursery will cover 2 acres, up from the current 1 acre, providing a vital boost to local reforestation efforts. “With this expansion, we are not only increasing seedling production but also taking meaningful steps toward environmental restoration,” stated the Ministry in a recent announcement.

Led by the Kenya Forest Service and the Kaberua Community Forest Association, this initiative is part of the Integrated Landscape Management for Conservation & Restoration of the Mt. Elgon Forest Ecosystem Project. Beyond ecological benefits, the expansion will create new employment opportunities for community members, fostering economic growth in the region.
