The arrest followed a tip-off that led to an intelligence-led investigation by the National Environment Management Authority (NEMA). Acting on the information, NEMA Police mobilized officers who posed as buyers to identify and apprehend the suspect. The operation was swift, resulting in her immediate arrest, and she is now in custody, facing charges in court.

“This action is part of our ongoing efforts to eliminate the illegal use, manufacture, and importation of banned plastic bags in the country,” NEMA stated.

The enforcement of these laws is crucial in the fight against environmental degradation and pollution, as plastic bags have been linked to significant ecological harm.

The plastic bags ban came into effect on 28th August 2017. Kenya has since attained over 80% success in ban enforcement. But challenges have been experienced with enforcement since some of our neighbors still use polythene bags and the same are illegally imported to Kenya.
