• The platform already boasts 50,000 active users, over 76,000 downloads, 5,523 registered organizations, and 4,623 self-registered nurseries. Since January 2023, more than 733 million trees have been documented an extraordinary milestone in Kenya’s climate action journey.

The Cabinet Secretary for Environment, Climate Change and Forestry, Deborah Barasa, affirms that the government safeguards Kenya’s natural heritage through science, innovation, and community-driven action. She highlights the groundbreaking mobile and web platform #JazaMiti, which stands at the heart of the country’s restoration efforts.

Barasa explains that the platform, developed and copyrighted by the Kenya Forestry Research Institute (KEFRI), integrates multidisciplinary science from plant physiology and meteorology to ICT and community adaptation to deliver a holistic, data-driven approach to tree growing.

“As the official platform of the 15B Tree Strategy, #JazaMiti provides science-based guidance for landscape restoration, agroforestry, and commercial forestry. It advances our national aspiration of achieving 30% tree cover by 2032, fully aligned with Vision 2030,” she says.

She emphasizes that the platform serves as Kenya’s national digital monitoring tool for ecosystem restoration, enabling precise planning, implementation, and tracking of reforestation activities. It enhances seedling survival, monitors restoration progress, maps nurseries, provides real-time BI dashboards, offers public APIs, and uses AI-powered validation to guarantee data integrity.

“As a Ministry, we continue to raise awareness on carbon markets and work closely with the Kenya Forest Service to ensure accurate reporting of planted trees. Jaza Miti is strengthening partnerships, supporting research, empowering communities, and opening local e-commerce opportunities,” Barasa adds.

According to CS Barasa, the platform already boasts 50,000 active users, over 76,000 downloads, 5,523 registered organizations, and 4,623 self-registered nurseries. Since January 2023, more than 733 million trees have been documented an extraordinary milestone in Kenya’s climate action journey.

“#JazaMiti is undeniably transforming restoration, elevating livelihoods, and propelling us toward our national climate goals,” Barasa concludes.

Launched by President William Ruto in December 2022, the Jaza Miti initiative represents Kenya’s most ambitious tree-growing campaign yet. The program aims to plant 15 billion trees by 2032, achieving 30% forest cover and positioning Kenya as a continental leader in climate resilience.
