• This year’s meeting aims to assess progress made since COP15, where nations agreed on over two dozen global biodiversity goals.

Dr. Festus Ngeno, the Principal Secretary in the State Department of Environment and Climate Change, has emphasized the significance of the Conference of the Parties to the Convention on Biological Diversity (CBD COP16).

He stated, “This meeting is a crucial forum for Kenya, offering opportunities to share best practices in biodiversity conservation, access international funding, and align our national policies with global biodiversity goals. It also provides a platform to address climate change resilience and support sustainable development goals through collaboration with partners and stakeholders, thereby strengthening Kenya's role in global biodiversity efforts. I am honored to lead a team of experts from Kenya at the #COP16 meeting in Cali, Colombia.”

The sixteenth meeting of the CBD, taking place in Cali from October 21 to November 1, 2024, is pivotal for global biodiversity discussions. Nearly 200 countries have gathered to address the urgent need to combat the alarming rate of environmental degradation. A key focus of this conference will be to review the implementation of the Kunming-Montreal Global Biodiversity Framework, a critical roadmap established at COP15 in 2022.

Among the focus for this year’s meeting is to assess progress made since COP15, where nations agreed on over two dozen global biodiversity goals. Countries are expected to present their strategic plans detailing priorities for future action.
