Kenyan youths can take part in environmental conservation and address climate change issues as President William Ruto hints at rebranding the Kazi Mtaani initiative into Climate Work Mtaani.

The rebranded initiative will focus on greening the environment and addressing climate change issues.

President William Ruto made this announcement on August 26, 2024, during the 88th passing out of National Youth Service officers in Gilgil, Nakuru County.

President William Ruto has said that the National Youth Service (NYS) will manage Climate Work Mtaani.

Initially, the Kazi Mtaani initiative focused on infrastructure and community service. Ruto has said that the rebranded initiative will be a stepping stone to achieving the target of 15 billion trees by 2032.

“I want to announce that the National Youth Service will be supervising the cohort of young people that we will be recruiting under our Climate Work Mtaani initiative that will bring more young people into the space of greening Kenya, of managing our environmental sustainability and making sure that we respond to matters climate change using the climate action initiative that we have in place,” he said.

Ruto has affirmed that the Climate Work Mtaani will benefit the country in terms of environmental conservation and the youth since it will provide job opportunities for them.

"This initiative is not just about job creation but also about instilling a sense of responsibility among our youth to take care of their environment. It is a critical part of our comprehensive strategy to address the myriad challenges of climate change while empowering our young population," he explained.
