• As UNEP calls for action, it invites individuals, communities, and nations to unite in shaping a sustainable and equitable future for generations to come.

As environmental, technological, and societal changes converge, posing significant threats to human, planetary, and economic health, the United Nations Environment Programme (UNEP), through its Executive Director, Ms Inger Anderson, emphasizes human collective responsibility to actively shape the future.

“We must not just prepare for the future; we must shape it so that coming generations can live in peace, prosperity, and equity,” stated UNEP Executive Director Inger Andersen.

Speaking at the The 79th session of the UN General Assembly (UNGA) Summit in New York, Andersen outlined the crucial steps necessary for delivering on global agreements while strengthening sustainable development. “We must operationalize the human right to a clean, healthy, and sustainable environment,” she asserted. This commitment involves transformative financial and economic strategies that prioritize equity and resilience, ensuring that all communities can thrive.

In her address, Andersen highlighted the importance of embracing circularity and sustainable practices across consumption and production, particularly in the context of energy transition and digital transformation.

“We must adopt one health approaches that improve human, animal, and planetary health simultaneously,” she emphasized, advocating for an integrated perspective that recognizes the interconnectedness of all life.

Andersen has urged stakeholders to identify and respond proactively to emerging challenges that disrupt progress. “We must remain vigilant and adaptive, ready to address the complexities that lie ahead,” she concluded.
