The Government of Kenya, in collaboration with the Global Green Growth Institute (GGGI), has launched a comprehensive technical report titled the "Green Growth Index."

This report aims to guide the country's transition towards a green economic growth and development model, emphasizing low carbon emissions, resource efficiency, and social equity.

The report, launched on June 25, 2024, was meticulously compiled by experts and stakeholders across various sectors. It presents a detailed analysis of Kenya's environmental performance and economic resilience.

It evaluates indicators such as renewable energy adoption, biodiversity conservation efforts, sustainable agriculture practices, and carbon emissions reduction strategies.

Based on the findings, the Government has made notable progress in integrating green technologies, promoting eco-friendly practices, and fostering partnerships for environmental conservation. However, the report also underscores the challenges ahead and the urgent need for collective action.

In 2019, GGCI developed the Green Growth Index to provide members and partners with a practical and explicit policy tool to measure their green growth performance and track their transition.

Dr Malle Fofana, GGGI’s Director and Head of Programs in Africa, said that the Index supports Government partners in identifying policy gaps, ultimately aiding the green revolution.

“This Green Growth Index is more than just a set of numbers; it is a compass that guides us towards a greener, more sustainable future. It supports our government partners in identifying policy gaps, helping them navigate the intricacies of the transition into a green economy model,” observed Dr Malle Fofana.

According to Dr Chris Kiptoo, the Principal Secretary, Kenya National Treasury, the Index serves as an evidence-based tool for assessing the impacts of green growth policy implementation and investments in the country. "It enables a comprehensive comparison of green growth performance, particularly against top-performing developing countries," he said.

Dr Festus Ng'eno, the Principal Secretary of the State Department for Environment, Climate Change and Forestry, hailed the launch, stating that it marks a significant milestone in Kenya's journey towards sustainable development and environmental stewardship. He also emphasized the need to embrace sustainability as a core principle.

"Achieving green growth requires a paradigm shift in our approach to development. It demands innovative solutions, bold policies, and sustained investments in green technologies and infrastructure," Dr Ng'eno said.

GGGI publishes the Green Growth Index annually in partnership with several international governments and academic institutions, leveraging the expertise of many international experts.
