The National Environment Management Authority (NEMA) has reiterated that entertainment venues, such as clubs located near residential areas, must either turn off their music amplifying equipment or soundproof their facilities. This requirement aims to mitigate noise pollution and ensure a peaceful environment for residents.

Despite these regulations, several entertainment joints in Nairobi have failed to comply. On October 23, 2024, environmental inspectors, along with police units, conducted a surveillance operation in areas including Kilimani, Hurlingham, Westlands, and Upper Hill. During this operation, authorities arrested owners of facilities that did not adhere to NEMA's guidelines.

“It is a requirement for entertainment joints such as clubs located in residential areas to turn off their music amplifying equipment or soundproof their facilities in line with the Noise and Excessive Vibration Pollution (Control) Regulations, 2009,” NEMA stated in a release on X. “Owners of non-compliant facilities were apprehended, while others received Improvement Orders.”

In addition to monitoring noise levels, the inspectors also focused on night construction activities, ensuring that all developments comply with their licensing conditions. According to regulations, construction work must cease by 6 PM on weekdays and is prohibited on weekends.
